Siem Reap Hotel

conceptual layout for hotel renovation & addition.

CAMBODIA WAS UNDER FRENCH RULE FOR NEARLY A CENTURY, FROM 1864 TO 1953, AND WHEN THE RUINS OF ANGKOR WERE DISCOVERED DURING WORLD WAR II, IT WAS THE FRENCH WHO RESTORED THE TEMPLES. IT’S INDEPENDENT NOW, BUT THE COUNTRY’S COLONIAL PAST IS STILL EVIDENT IN IT’S MODERN DAY ARCHITECTURE.

THIS HOTEL HAS IS A FAMILY OWNED BUISINESS THAT HAS BEEN IN OPERATION SINCE THE EARLY 2000’S. kahrtel HAS BEEN COMISIONED TO MASTERPLAN THE RENOVATION OF THE BUILDING IN VARIOUS STAGES TO MINIMISE THE IMPACT ON PLACED ON THE BUSINESS AS IT CONTINUES TO OPERATE.

SHIFTING THE RECEPTION AREA AND LOBBY CLOSER TO THE FRONT OF THE PROPERTY WILL BETTER SERVICE IT’S CLIENTS AS THEY CAN GREATE THE CUSTOMERS INSTANLY ON ARRIVAL. THE RECEPTION AREA IS NO LONGER IN THE MAIN PART OF THE BUILDING, NOW LINKING WITH THE OUTDOORS IT ENRICHES IT’S SENSE OF PLACE IN SOUTH EAST ASIA. THE DESIGN HAS BEEN HEAVILY INVOLENCED THROUGH THE SURROUNDING DESIGN AESTHETICS AND TECHNINCS USED IN THE ANCIENT TEMPLES, FURTHER CEMENTING CAMBODIA’S HISTORY AND IDENTY WITH THE TEMPLES.

A NEW POOL BAR SERVICES BOTH THE POOL AREA AND NEW RESTAURANT. BOTH SPACES ARE DESIGNED TO MAXIMISE ON EFFECIENCIES WITH THE STAFF AND IT’S GUESTS. SURROUNDED BY LUSH GREENERY THE SPACES HAVE BEEN ALIGNED TO TAKE IN STRATEGIC VISTAS OF THE INNERSPACE.

KEEPING THE PROFILE OF THE ADDITION LOW WAS OUT OF RESPECT TO THE FAMILIES PRIDE AND JOY WHICH THE OLD BUILDING STILL SITS PROMINENT ON A PLINTH TOWERING OVER THE ADDITION.
