Tokyo Crematorium

Recent submission designing a crematorium in the heart of Tokyo Japan

THE PRIMARY CHALLENGE OF THIS BUILDING IS TO ADHERE TO THE TRADITIONAL ‘HORIZTONAL / LINEAR’ LAYOUT AND RELATIONSHIP OF THE SPACES REQUIRED IN A CREMATORIUM. THIS THEN TURNS TO THE CHALLENGE OF THE ACCEPTANGE OF THE BUILDING AS A VERTICAL TOWERING STRUCTURE, AIMING TO PROMOTE THE EXACT SAME PLEASANTRIES THAT A TRADITIONAL CREMATORIUM PROVIDES.

TOKYO. THE MOST POPULATED CITY OF JAPAN, BRIMMING AND THRIVING WITH ACTIVITY; A MEGALOPOLIS TEEMING WITH ENDLESS SKYSCRAPERS AND CAPTIVATING NEON LIGHTS. SHINJUKU. AN AREA EQUIVALENT TO THAT OF A CITY; IN IT’S OWN RIGHT IT BOASTS A CITYSCAPE HOME TO A MYRIAD OF DIFFERENT USER GROUPS, THRIVING OFF THE MAJOR ARTERY THAT IS SHINJUKU STATION. BUT WITHIN THIS NOISEY AND VIBRANT  CONCRETE JUNGLE, IS A SANCTUARY, SHELTERED WITHIN THE CONFINES OF THE EARTH –  A RELIEF FROM THE STRESSES OF OUR DAILY STRUGGLES – A TEMPORARY RELIEF FROM THE CHAOTIC URBAN LANDSCAPE. ENIVAR IS A SUBTERRANEAN  PLACE OF REFLECTION AND CONTEMPLATION.
